Together on the Same Page
By Jan Brown
Samuel Bagster wanted everyone in his family to be on the same page. That's why in 1794 he compiled daily scriptures centering around a theme to use in his family worship time. He called it The Daily Light.
When Ruth Bell Graham was a young child in China, her mother wanted everyone in her family to be on the same page. That's why she presented her daughter with a very special book. It was called the Daily Light.
On her tenth birthday, Anne Graham was given a small package. She opened it to find her own copy of the treasured volume. Ruth Bell Graham was making sure that her family was always on the same page, too.
Throughout her childhood, Anne faithfully read the Daily Light and when she had children of her own, each one received a copy of it on their tenth birthday.
"To this day," Anne reflects, "One of the sweetest blessings for me is to know each morning and evening my parents and my children are reading the same thing."
The other day, I was rummaging through a dusty box of family books when I ran across an old volume that was missing its cover. Turning over the first page, I found a faded inscription from my great-grandfather to his loving wife. The title of the book? The Daily Light.
As I sat there on the floor with books scattered about me, I realized that God was lighting a burning desire within me as well. This New Year's Day each member of my family will receive a copy of the Daily Light. For as we begin the uncertainty of a new chapter, turning the leaf from one century to the next, I want to make certain that we are all together. Bonded together in fellowship though we may be miles apart. United together in Spirit through the ministry of God's Word. And all together on the same page, thanks to the efforts of Samuel Bagster and The Daily Light.
