Best of All, God is With Us
When John Wesley was four years old he managed to pull an old crate to the window of his second story bedroom. Then he climbed up onto the crate and waved out the window to the neighbors gathered on the lawn below. It may not seem to you a very large feat for a four year old boy to pull a box to the window of his own home and stand upon it, however for this four year old boy the home was on fire.
Because of John's quick thinking, his neighbors were able to form a human ladder and rescue him from the flames. From that day on, John was called the brand that was snatched from the fire.
And best of all, God was with him.
John grew up to take the Gospel to all of England, and to the pioneers and natives of America. Tired and weary he averaged 8,000 miles a year by horseback during each of which he seldom preached less than one thousand times.
He would traverse any distance in any weather to preach the Word. John Wesley and his "helpers." were the first preachers since the days of the Franciscan Friars in the Middle Ages who ever reached the working classes. And best of all, God was with them.
Once, while traveling through the swamps of Georgia, John and his companions became disoriented. Faint and weary, having had no food all day, the men divided one ginger cake among them. As darkness closed in they were forced to admit they were lost and opted to spend the night in near freezing conditions. Not knowing if they would see the morning, John and his companions prayed for God to help them. Having prayed, John Wesley did not worry. He slept soundly until six the next morning. And even though there fell a heavy dew which covered them over as white as snow, the men were all able to carry on the next morning. They decided to retrace their steps, and found that the day before, in the thickest part of the wood, John had done an unusual thing. In his journal, John Wesley wrote:
"
I had broken many young trees, I knew not why, as we walked along; these we found a great help in several places where no path was to be seen; and between one and two God brought us safe to Benjamin Arieus house, the man we left the day before.."And best of all, God was with them.
Years later, a small group gathered around the bed of the old man. It was evident that John Wesley was nearing the end of his pilgrimage in this life. He beckoned them to kneel around him and pray. As they concluded their prayers, John moved his lips unable to utter the words on his heart. The small group moved closer, and with one last burst of strength John cried out, "The best of all is, God is with us"; and then, as if to assert the faithfulness of our promise-keeping Jehovah and comfort the hearts of his weeping friends, he lifted his dying arm in token of victory and raising his feeble voice again repeated the heart-reviving words, "The best of all is, God is with us!" (The Journals of John Wesley, "Wesley's Last Hours by One Who was Present.")
What are you facing today? Is it the heat of a fiery trial? Dear Child of God, you are his precious brand plucked from the flames.
Are you lost in the wilderness of this world, unable to see the way ahead? Weary traveler, He will guide you, His Word will light the way.
Are you facing illness , a chronic disease, or death of a loved one? Be encouraged you are surrounded by the prayers of the One who conquered death and now daily goes before the throne to make intercession for you..
No matter what your circumstance you are not alone.
What can separate you from the love of Christ? Shall trouble? Shall hardship? Or persecution? Or famine? Shall nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:34-39)
With John Wesley.we can in triumph exclaim,
Best of all, God is with us!" -Jan Brown , 1999
