Meet Me at the Well

Sarai tries to help God out. . .

Sarai was TIRED OF WAITING! She had been faithful to follow God and her husband in search of the land that was promised them. She had been patient in waiting for God to reveal His will and His way. She had been trusting Him to keep His promise to give to them an heir, but it was getting old. She was down to her last nerve when it came to waiting on the Lord!

Do you ever feel that way? Like you have waited and waited for God to fulfill His promise to you? Do you ever find yourself saying to God:

Can't we move a little faster, Lord? Come on Lord, let me help you. Here, let's take this path instead...follow me God!!!

That's what Sarai did. Instead of continuing to follow God in the dark, she decided to bungle on ahead. She was no longer satisfied with His way and His pace. She was just plain tired of waiting!

Sarai knew God had promised that Abram's descendants would inherit the land of Canaan. She knew that God had promised to bless them and make of Abram a great nation. But man oh man...she was no spring chicken! She was 75 years old!!! If God was going to do this, well it was pretty obvious He wasn't going to do it through her! Maybe God didn't mean to use her womb? Maybe God needed to use someone else's womb?

So instead of sitting down in God's waiting room, Sarai began to push her way into the delivery room. I can just hear Sarai at 2 AM one morning saying,

Abram...wake up...Abram...didn't God say that he would make of you a great nation???

Zzzzzzz...wha??? Why yes, dear he did. Now go back to sleep...

Well, Abram...how's he going to do that? Do you realize how old I am going to be on this birthday???

Burfday? ummmm let me think...you look so young...this must be number 56???

You really think I only look 56???...I think it must be that new Oil of Delay from Egypt...ah.. Come on...Abram. I'm going to be 76 this birthday!!! How am I supposed to give you a son to carry on your name?&

I don't know Sarai, let's just trust God and go back to sleep...

Abram...I really feel that God wants us to start making some plans for this heir. I really think that, since I am so old, it is obvious we cannot expect Him to be planning to use my womb. I really sense, Abram, that its time we thought of a surrogate womb...

A surro-what???

You know, someone else to bear this child. Its done all the time Abram. Everyone is doing it these days. They use one of their servants. They just borrow a womb...it would be OK. I mean it wouldn't be as if you loved her. It would be just to bear offspring and give you the heir God promised.

And so the stage was set, the plans were laid, and not once was God consulted. Sarai in her eagerness to help God out never once asked Him what He thought of her plan.

And for awhile it appeared to have worked. Hagar the slave girl from Egypt was given to Abram. She became his wife. She became pregnant. She became the way for Sarai to have the family she longed for and the means of an heir for Abram. So far so good...HOWEVER....(isn't it amazing how God always puts a HOWEVER right smack in the middle of all our plans?) Hagar also became haughty and insolent toward Sarai.

Maybe she said things like: "No Mistress, I cannot go to the well for water...I am pregnant! You go for the water..."

Maybe she resented the rental of her womb.

Perhaps she rubbed it in that she was able to conceive when Sarai could not.

The Bible doesn't tell us. It just says that Hagar began to despise Sarai, and Sarai grew very upset. So upset that she blamed Abram for all her own mistakes and decisions.

"After all, Abram, you are the spiritual leader of this family, did you ever stop to pray before you went ahead with this decision???"

So upset that she even got Abram's permission to mistreat Hagar who then ran away.

And as bungled as her plans seemed to her then, Sarai would be amazed to see the results of her intervention today. Hagar went on to mother Ishmael, the father of the Arab nation. And Sarai went on to mother Isaac, the Father of the Jews.

Who says our plans don't affect others? Who says our ways are ever better than God's??

Are you in God's waiting room today? Are you just on the verge of taking matters into your own hands? of helping God out just a bit??? Remember Sarai, she would tell you...STAY!

Stay in God's waiting room...wait for His timing! He doesn't need your help. He can do this without your assistance!
Rest in Him.
Remember the goodness of His character.
Review His faithfulness in the past.
Be watchful.
Be waiting.
Be still.
And remember... He is GOD!
